So if I decide on adoption, how does this whole thing work?

 FIRST PHASE

  1. Call Adoption Network of Colorado toll-free at 800-982-3778 or 303-795 -8200, or email us at allison@adoptioninternational.net.
  2. Meeting with an experienced Adoption Network of Colorado counselor, who will assist you in exploring your feelings about adoption. Adoption can be a positive solution for a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. However, it does not work for everyone. We'll help you learn the decision-making process, and discuss your options, so that you may decide what is best for you and your baby.
  3. Complete and sign paperwork needed for your confidential file.

 SECOND PHASE

  1. Begin pre-natal care, or obtain your medical records for Adoption Network of Colorado.
  2. You can choose the adoptive family for your baby by reviewing profiles of our waiting families.
  3. If you desire, you can meet the family you have chosen, or talk to them by telephone.
  4. You and the adoptive family can discuss and come to an agreement concerning the level of openness and the amount of contact you desire in the future.
  5. Continue in counseling for information and emotional support. Counseling through Adoption Network of Colorado is provided both before and after the birth of your baby. With your counselor, prepare the Hospital Plan form.

THIRD PHASE

  1. Tour the hospital where you will be giving birth, and pre-register.
  2. Keep in touch with the family you have chosen, through meetings, telephone calls and/or e-mail.
  3. When you go into labor, the adoptive parents and your counselor can meet you at the hospital when you have been admitted, if that is your desire. Your counselor will assist you in interfacing with the hospital staff, and in completing the required paperwork. She will also provide as much care and emotional support as you need.
  4. Your baby will be placed directly with the adoptive parents you have chosen) no foster care).

FOURTH PHASE

  1. After placement of your baby, you can expect a period of mourning. Adoption  Network will help you understand the normal grief process that accompanies loss in placing a child for adoption. We encourage you to participate in counseling for as long as you need it.
  2. Adoption Network of Colorado will provide all legal services after the birth and placement of Your baby, in relinquishing your parental rights.

" From what I see of you, something is there, even now, that wasn't there before. There are glimpses of wholeness behind the thousands of shattered pieces of your broken heart, a new, whole self who has dared to face life's most frightening moments. Even though the little things bring sobs to your throat, you are indeed brave. Even though confusion has disordered your life, you are indeed brave. You are brave because, in the very act of grieving for what has been lot, you are opening up to what will be new. You are sharing unimagined, but certainly waiting for you at the end of your time of mourning."   Molly Fumia- Safe Passages
